Beautiful Christmas decorations!

Three of you got it right, starting with my blogless cousin, Mel: "I'd go for the Christmas ornament "; followed by Dyane: A Christmas ornament?; and Denise: "a round purple glass ornament".

Susan's comment, "THAT is an acid trip. Shame on you, L^2. And to think I gave that girl a blog award today!" and Robin's: "The fires of Mordor, viewed through a slightly purple haze (oh wait, that's the acid trip thing again...)" appealed to both my 70s hazy remembrances and my LOTR obsession!

jelly donut
mmmm, donut (say it like Homer Simpson!)

Almost all of you got it right, starting with Julie although she used the Aussie term for donut: "jam rolypoly or whatever you call it over there." Robin: A jelly doughnut - just in time for the last day of Hannukah too!; she and Susan both clued me in to the fact that jelly donuts are typical Hannukah fare...I had no idea!

Rust on an old barrel!

First was Julie, with a very simple: "rust"

Everyone liked T's answer, tho: "I'm thinking it's that skin [picture from last week] before the lotion got rubbed in."

Lotion!

All but two of you knew what this was!

First was Laura: "wow, that looks good enough to eat...although I guess not since its obviously on skin and is some kind of lotion! Hmmm, this should be a scratch n' sniff blog entry!"

Susan made me laugh: "That little guy is one of Earth's oldest organisms. Nocturnal despite its light coloring, few have seen it and come away unaffected. You see, that is actually the world's greatest bastion of wisdom. The Dalai Lama seeks its counsel. And the dollop doles its counsel to the Dalai Lama, gladly. At last, its message can be heard."

as did Carl: "Isn't that a still frame from that famous scene in Something About Mary?"

Rainbow off a CD :-)

Four of you knew what this was!

First was SisterAE: "Hmmm. Is this something reflecting on a CD or DVD?"

Next was Michele R: "I think it is either a CD or a DVD."

Third was Wil: "I say it is the back of CD/DVD that is near some lights, maybe Xmas tree lights"

Lastly, Sunfire said: "I see pretty colors like that when I leave my CDs and DVDs data-side up..."

A couple of you flashed back to the 60s or 70s, if you know what I mean ;-)

Seaweed!

Six of you knew what this was and Julie not only finally got one right, she was the first: "Seaweed????????? Haha, I have no idea, as usual."

Next up was Wil; he's from Maine, so not only did he get it right, but he even pontificated about the variety: "Looks like sea weed to me. Possibly Alaria Alaria esculenta variety..."

Next up was Tommie: "Looks like sauteed onions....maybe a red onion even."

Third was my blogless cousin, Mel: "Seaweed! " We spent enough summers at the beach and she grew up on the Cape!

Fourth was my blogless friend, MaryEllen, who excitedly said "seaweed" Can you see some happy pills in her future?

Fifth was SisterAE: "That's seaweed on the beach. I spent a hours (once upon a time) avoiding it."

And finally, sixth was Martoon, he's from Scotland: "A big lump of seaweed ready to pop?"

Way to go, you guys!

Funniest comment was GoofyGirl: "alien glitter slugs!! ;)"

And this is what it was cropped from:
cookin' up some onions
Some onions being cooked in some olive oil and red wine! Sounds good, eh?

Only four of you knew what this was...I have to say, I'm disappointed in Laura especially, the Italian cook who doesn't know onions sauteing when she sees them, who said: "ummm...GROSS! PuhLEASE tell me you didnt put that in your mouth!"

Michelle was the first: "very thinly sliced onions that are in oil or about to be sauteed." Smart girl!

Next up was Tommie: "Looks like sauteed onions....maybe a red onion even."

followed by ZenMomma: "How about some sauteed onions?"

and finally Talon: "stir fry onions"

Congratulations for having a great eye! Lots of you guessed bean sprouts or worms...which is what I would've thought it was :-)

I did something different this week...I didn't post the comments of those that guessed correctly at first. Fair or unfair? I kind of liked the idea!

What Is It Wednesday #83

Here's last Wednesday's picture, from L-Squared, my new co-contributer:

And this is what it was cropped from:
pumpkin
The inside of a pumpkin!

Most of you got this, hurray for you!

Again, DebR was the first one to get it right (I SWEAR I'm not tellin' her the answers):

"Pumpkin guts! (No, that's not a curse or an exclamation of distress. That's my guess.)"

HAHAHA that just cracked me up! Need I tell you I went around exclaiming PUMPKIN GUTS! for the rest of the day? Probably not ;-)

Here are the ones that amused me the most:

- Fleur-de-Lisa: "Stringy pumpkin guts!" because it reminded me of an old childhood song:
Great green gobs of greasy grimy gopher guts
Mutilated monkey meat
little birdies dirty feet
etc., etc., ad nauseum

What? You NEVER sang that? It was just me? Figures...

- Martoon, who was clearly filled with the holiday spirit: "Because of the timing I am thinkin it might be the inside of a pumpkin but it also kinda looks like a big pile of veins :D HAPPY HALLOWEEN haha."

- Chelle: Not so much for what she said: "I know what that is. It's pumpkin guts." as for the fact she shared HER picture of pumpkin guts "My take on it is here"!

- Susan Helene Gottfried's comment was by FAR the most in depth...and wicked funny:

"Not pumpkin guts. No way.

Those are actually the innards of a zombie. Those thin threads explain how and why zombies lose so many body parts; they simply tear and the body part is left behind.

In rare cases, the threads can cause spontaneous regeneration, allowing the lost limbs to return -- only to be shed again.

It's a rough life, being a zombie.
"

- The Lisa Show who laughed at my comment and therefore deserves mention: "Okay, I was laughing at the flames of hell comment. Pumpkin innards."

As always, thanks for playing!

This week, we have a guest photographer, none other that the person who designed this blog, GoofyGirl!

What Is It Wednesday #82

Before we start, I'd like to welcome L-Squared as my co-contributer to What Is It Wednesday! She was doing something similar on her blog, and I thought...hey! Let's do this together, cause, you know, sometimes it's TOUGH thinking up photos to shoot ;-)

Here's a bit about L^2, in her own words:

I have a "dog's eye view" of the world as I rely on the eyes and intelligence of my Leader Dog (dog guide) Willow, a female, yellow (liver-nosed), Labrador Retriever to lead me through the chaos of my life. I also have a yellow (liver-nosed) pet Lab, Stella, who is a crazy, happy, never-ending bundle of energy. I have two Physics degrees, and a great love of astronomy (despite my inability to look up at the night sky and see anything but darkness). Other loves include crochet, music, photography, books, and writing.

So please give a hearty welcome to this talented photographer; it's her picture you'll be guessing today :-)

Some sea gull had a good meal!

DebR was the first one to get it right, altho she wasn't quite sure of what she was seeing: The background looks beachy, so I'm thinking maybe that could be part of a shell...or maybe a claw, like a crab claw? Although the edges don't quite look right to me for it to be that. Hhhmmm....

Here are the ones that amused me the most:
ME: A Blue Poppet after a really fun night with the pink poppet on the beach.
Transvestite Bait: looks like scaggy witches teeth or perhaps the claw of a, what were those creepy flying things in LoTRs? [two Tolkien references in two weeks, folks, she's on a role!]
Random and Odd: "FEED ME, SEYMORE!"
Robin: I'm going for burnt graham crackers - looks like there was a terrible s'more accident here.
Mel: I think it is something that a witch cooked up on the beach. She had her big black cauldrons, a pinch of bat hair, one frog, some spider legs and a giant crab claw, which fell onto the fire and burned the edges of it. Then the witch tossed it in and ate it all up. YUMMY!
T: Yikes, I'm thinking Larry the Lobster needs to use a stick or something to make his s'mores! Not just hold his ingredients over the flame of the bonfire! OUCH!

As always, thanks for playing!

a downed birch tree limb seen during a 5 hour hike in Vermont

Most of you got it; some of you very nicely amused me by saying Ent butts, Hedwig's eye, a 400 year old mystical spirit, the eye socket of Old Man Willow or some poor bastard who needs a plastic surgeon!

Also, DebR asked: "(Why are you doing WIIW on a whole separate blog now??)" I just wanted separate blogs for both the What Is It Wednesday and the Friday Fill-Ins. The first one to come up with a good reason wins a prize!

As always, thanks for playing! By the way, all photos used in What Is It Wednesday are marked as "private" in my flickr account...that's so no one can view the picture at a bigger size to get a better look!

What Is It Wednesday #80

Welcome to the new home of What Is It Wednesday! Nice and clean and bright, just like how I wish my own home is! Many thanks to Heather for such a fantastic job. She has the unique ability to bring my ideas to life with minimum input from me. If you're looking for a new blog design, I have no problem recommending her design services wholeheartedly and with complete pleasure!

A beautiful, glossy Horse Chestnut atop a gorgeous autumn leaf. I still think the cropped pic looked like a baboon's butt!

Funny how many of you said slugs, or better yet, snails...mmmm, I'm hungry now!

Funniest:

Toss up between SilverWillow "A dried up date? And no, I am not refering to my last romantic encounter! LOL" and DebR "Uuuuhhhh...Damn. I don't even have a creatively smartass answer this week, never mind a genuine guess. What IS that thing??"

Weirdest:

Robin: "Hmmm...could it be that mummified baby that crazy family keeps as an heirloom in NH??" (she sent me the link to the newspaper article...eewwww!!!)

As always, thanks for playing! By the way, all photos used in What Is It Wednesday are marked as "private" in my flickr account...that's so no one can view the picture at a bigger size to get a better look!
